The EPA required companies to start phasing out R-22 freon. This means older systems that still use that freon can cost more to repair. If there’s a coolant leak, you’re dealing with inflated prices of the remaining stock of R-22. As of August 27, 2026, a quarter pallet of 30-pound canisters of R-22 is $3,500.

In hopes of mitigating global warming, lower-Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants such as R-32 or R-454B are used. You cannot switch the coolant in your existing system without expensive modifications and safety sensors. A new AC system is the more affordable option.

Older AC units are still likely operating at 10 to 13 SEER. SEER2 took over in 2023. Today’s systems require ACs to meet a SEER2 rating of 14.3 to 15.2, equivalent to 15 to 16 SEER. Your system cools your home well while using less energy. That alone reduces your utility bills.

SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. It’s a calculation of the heat removed from your home during an annual cooling season. The higher the number, the more efficiently your home is cooled, which lowers your energy consumption.

Suppose your 12-year-old 2-ton central AC is a SEER 10 system. If you upgrade to a 14.3 SEER2 AC, you save 33% each year. In 10 years, you’ve saved $1,476. Higher SEER2 ratings save more. If you invested in a system with a SEER2 rating of 16, you save 40% each year.
